Needles and Threads
In this section, we shall briefly examine the properties required of threads and the design and proportion of needles, specifically for when you are stitching shoes. Also pertinent to this discussion of stitching shoes is the effect of needle and thread selection on Scam strength.
Threads
Threads and seams selected for stitching shoes’ uppers should be designed in such a way that the thread will always break before the material. A scam can be restitched when stitching shoes, but once leather is torn, it cannot be repaired. The choice of thread for stitching shoes depends on the end usage. For stitching shoes when closing shoe uppers, the important requirements are sew ability, tensile properties, seam strength, abrasion resistance, extensibility, and heat resistance.
Sewability
In terms of overall sewing performance when it comes to stitching shoes, cotton threads are generally the best. Continuous filament threads are more susceptible to heat damage when stitching shoes. Spun threads are better for stitching shoes, and core-spun threads are better still because of the protection afforded by their cotton covering.
Once a thread is sewn into leather or fabric when stitching shoes, the scam must have certain properties to match those of the article produced. The most important property when stitching shoes is strength. However, the strongest thread available when stitching shoes is not always the best, nor does a stronger thread always produce a stronger seam because such a thread may well be thicker and cause weakening by excessive perforation by the needle.
Tensile Properties
The minimum acceptable strength when stitching shoes is about 1 kg, and although much stronger threads are available for stitching shoes, strengths in excess of 5 kg are not normally needed for general upper closing. For normal men's shoe uppers repairs when stitching shoes, strengths of around 3 kg to 4 kg are satisfactory, and for lightweight shoes, one can generally go down to about 2 kg. The weaker threads when stitching shoes, at strength of 1 kg breaking load, are reserved for slippers.
When stitching shoes, we normally use a thinner thread in the bobbin than in the needle because the needle thread loses strength by abrasion and it passes backwards and forwards through the eye of the needle.
Strength
When stitching shoes’ seams, a double row ff stitching can be used, with consequent improvement in scam strength from the same stitch strength. However, if a twin-needle machine is used when stitching shoes and the stitch tensions are different, then the tighter row of stitching will take any stresses before the slacker row, and little gain in strength may be achieved.
On the other hand, when stitching shoes in a tightly and evenly sewn double scam, the strength may be more than twice that of a single seam because friction between the leather surfaces contributes to the total strength.
