Cattle hide provide most leather that is turned into shoes. When choosing leather for a shoe, many variables are considered. Older, more mature cattle produce thicker and less flexible hides than younger ones do. Side leathers are used as shoe uppers frequently. Though, the use to which the side is put depends on the condition of the grain surface. And hides with superficial marks can be corrected and finished as smooth-grain or patent leather for shoes. Hides with deeper marks are corrected and then printed with a heavy pattern, which can be used with certain shoe designs. Very badly marked hides are used for reverse-hide suede shoes. Small quantities of pigskin and sheepskins are also used for shoes. Ultimately, though, all of this is only pertinent to shoes when it comes to the leather’s final quality, which is achieved by varying the choice of raw material and the sequence of the tanning processes.
Strength and Stretch
Shoe manufacturing methods, other than for some shoes like strap sandals and slippers, require the upper material on shoes to be subjected to considerable tension and stretching during molding. The upper part of the shoe must stretch adequately before a turning point is reached if it the shoe is to last properly. Therefore, the leather used in shoes must stretch well—a more important quality often than strength. Leather can have both very high tensile strength and adequate stretch before it breaks, depending on the type of hide or skin, its method of tanning and finishing, and its substance.
Leather is normally stronger than necessary for shoe manufacturing, unless the shoe leather has been abnormally weakened and stretched by chemical treatment, damage, or by too great a reduction in thickness. The following are examples: Over-tanning of upper leather in shoes may reduce its strength and ability to sustain stretching due to wearing. Strong acids or alkalis encountered in wear chemically damage and weaken upper leather, which can cause undue stretching in the shoe. Heavy hides split down excessively to give thin leather, which causes too much stretching of the shoe during normal wear.
