Shoe Flex Resistance

Flexing endurance may be one of the most important features that shoe repair materials need. Leathers that we use in shoe repair have a very high flexing endurance and usually only break down under flexing because of chemical or physical damage to the fibers.
As opposed to leather, many synthetic shoe repair materials quickly develop cracks and cuts at perforations, cut-outs, and needle holes, often as a result of breakdown in an underlying layer. Because of the numerous ways in which failure can occur to this shoe repair material, we only use materials that have good results after a flexing test—this is a test recommended specifically for all synthetic shoe repair materials. Because leather doesn’t break down in the same way, this test is not performed on shoe repair leathers, except with specialty finishes such as patent and wet-look.

Shoe and Foot Comfort

Softness and flexibility are well known factors for shoe comfort. There are two additional ones that are less known, however. The two most important foot-comfort properties of an upper material arc are permeability and absorption.
For water repellency and resistance to water penetration in shoes, coated fabrics are excellent. But because foot comfort depends on the shoe’s absorption of foot perspiration, impermeable shoe repair materials do not maximize comfort. This has been overcome to some extent by using absorbent coated fabrics. However, this is only a limited solution, since coated lining materials in shoes is not against the foot—so the shoe’s ability to absorb is still limited.
Despite the ability of many of the newer coated shoe repair fabrics to transmit water vapor—often at a rate approaching that of shoe leather—shoe leather is still undoubtedly more comfortable than the best of the synthetics. Although foot comfort is directly related to shoe water vapor ability (so it would seem that synthetic materials would be just as comfortable), there is a fundamental difference between any shoe leather and even the best shoe microporous synthetic materials. The fibers in microporous synthetic materials cannot absorb water vapor, which is transmitted through the shoe repair material. However, in shoe repair leather, during the absorption process, water vapor is transmitted by the material’s fibers. This is key because, it is in the shoe absorption process and transmission that makes shoe leather comfortable.
Still, simple shoe leather has its drawbacks, as well. Shoe leather is able to absorb and hold large quantities of water without feeling cold and clammy; but if the rate of perspiration formation exceeds the rate of transmission in a microporous synthetic materials, the shoe repair material becomes wet and uncomfortable. To avoid this, an addition of an absorbent lining during the shoe repair process will help. The addition of a shoe insole (which absorbs moisture) during the shoe repair process is also helpful.
However, shoe comfort is a subjective matter, and in view of the many factors affecting it, we avoid making sweeping generalizations about the merits of various shoe repair materials. However, when you come in for your shoe repair, we are happy to discuss various options to maximize the comfort of your shoes and feet.
