Over the last 50 or so years there has been a major change in the resoling materials used for shoes. Leather has been the traditional material for resoling shoes. Now most shoes are not resole with leather, but are resole with rubber or plastic—both of which are called synthetic resoling materials.
The kind of resoling materials that is used for shoes depends on such factors as of fashion demands, how easy the resoling material is to manufacture, its price, durability, and whether there is a satisfactory source of supply for the shoe’s resoling material.

Simply because it’s interesting to learn how we got to where we are now with the materials that we use to resole shoes, we'll now trace the growth in the use of non-leather soles for resoling shoes from the 1940s and 1950s to the present time. The 1940s and 1950s was the turning point in the use of rubber to resole shoes because up to this time rubber soles were used mainly on cheaper shoes. However, the growth of the synthetic rubber industry, especially during the war, started to have a profound effect on marketing new materials to resole shoes. Materials such as Neolite and Avonite appeared as possibilities to resole shoes. And the development of resin rubber led to the development of one of the most outstanding materials to resole shoes. The effect of these developments in materials to resole shoes was felt first in the U.S. in about 1948.

The use of cellular soles to resole shoes soon followed, and in 1952, the use of these shoe soles boomed in the U.S. Up to this time, the U.S. had the most influence on the developments in materials that were used to resole shoes, but European suppliers of materials that were used to resole shoes quickly responded by undertaking further development.

At the same time, the moulded-on rubber process as a way to resole shoes was also growing. This process significantly affected the growth in the use of rubber to resole shoes, but it also stimulated interest in the pre-moulded rubber bottom. It is also important to note that prefabricated units made to resole shoes, most of which were made from crepe, were now well developed and had made resoling shoes a newer and higher class of shoemaking. Likewise, the pre-moulded shoe sole began to develop into something more than a sole and heel that could be attached to a cheap shoe.
