Way before there was a need for leather shoe repair, primitive man turned either to large leaves or to animal skins when looking for a covering material for himself, his hut, and his food. The skins were usually chosen for clothing because they were bigger, stronger and warmer.
However, skins (no, not leather used in leather shoe repair; just skins) have three main defects: They are damp. If left wet, especially in a warm climate, they soon start to putrefy. And, the hair falls off, they stink, and they eventually fall to pieces. These are certainly not what you are looking for in a material to be used in for your shoes or shoe repair materials!
Still, there is hope with this system. If the skins are thoroughly dried, the putrefaction is stopped, but the skin becomes hard. Dried skins lose their flexibility and softness, however, and become very hard and brittle. They are liable to crack and become quite unsuitable for clothing or shoes. Moreover, if they become wet again, putrefaction starts again and they eventually fall to pieces. (Again, none of this is what you are looking for in your shoes or shoe repair materials).
To overcome these problems, hides and skins are turned into leather by tanning. (Thankfully, finally, we have come to a solution for your leather shoe repair needs!) Tanning causes tanned hides or skin not to putrefy, even after drying and wetting. And, on drying, the tanned skin does not become a hard brittle material, but remains flexible and workable. This is exactly why we use leather for your shoe repairs.
Still, there is a method to be chosen, in order to get the right leather shoe repair materials for your shoes. Different tanning methods affect how hard or soft, tight or stretchy the leather shoe repair material needs to be. The original methods of tanning used smoke, the barks or leaves of trees, animal and fish oils, and certain salts. The most important salt was alum, a form of aluminum plate. Alum has now been largely replaced by salts of chromium, which make the leather blue-green. Other materials used today are a variety of synthetic chemicals specially made for tanning, which make the leather perfect for leather shoe repair materials.
When people had found a way to tan skins, they soon found many uses for them. Leather has been used for making shoes and shoe repair materials, as well as every possible article of clothing; bags, buckets, and plates; amour; tool and weapon handles; whips, harnesses and ropes; hammer heads; tent walls, carpets, upholstery, beading, and writing material (parchment); and for covering boats and canoes.
These uses demand many different properties in the leather. For example, compare the soft feel and stretch of gloving leather with the solid firmness of sole leather for shoe repair. These different qualities are obtained either by the choice of skin or a variation of the sequence of tanning processes.
